Sturm looked from Farran, still fishing just off the shore, back to the town of Noyonne. The three wagons he had been watching were stopped near a large, low building at the center of the town. Like the rest of the buildings in Noyonne, this building was a single story wooden structure. Its walls were heavily weathered, a pale gray that contrasted with the bright greens of the valley around the town.

Just below the lip of the tunnel, Bilbus stopped. He cautiously poked his head above ground level, turning slowly back and forth, his eyes barely above the lip of the tunnel. The opening of the spider's tunnel was in a clearing in a dense forest. The clearing was about 15 paces in diameter, covered with thick grass and a few dark rocks. The trees surrounding the clearing were all older, none shorter than fifteen paces tall. The sky above was bright blue, clear of clouds save for a wispy column of smoke just visible above the trees.

Rishala quickly descended the rope ladder to the rocky beach of Kieta. He dropped to all fours and kissed the smooth rocks of the beach, then looked skyward. "Thank the gods, we survived that boat trip!"

The Swift sailed south quickly, passing into the wide mouth of the River Llwelyn where it emptied into the Vasmar. The crowded skyline of Londoun stretched as far as the eye could see to east and west along the shores of the Vasmar, a chaotic jumble of steeply peaked roofs and square-topped buildings in various shades of gray beneath a gray sky that grew black to the east, where a powerful thunderstorm was threatening to roll over the city.

The travelers returned to Londoun early on a cool afternoon. A low haze hung over the large city from the thousands of fires that had been lit to fend off the chill of the previous evening. Winds blowing in from the north, across the Vasmar, had brought an unseasonably early taste of the upcoming winter to the quarter million residents of the capitol city of the Kingdom of the Five Crowns.

The party finished moving their belongings to the third floor of the apartments. Kasey and Eric donned their plate armors while Sturm sat on the back of one of the couches, wearing his stiff leather armor while running a sharpening stone along his sword. Breanna fidgeted nervously on one of the other couches while Bilbus paced from the common room to one of the bedrooms to check on traffic in the inner bailey. Rishala adjusted his great kilt, checking the lay of the aprons in front to be sure they were even and smooth. Meridaun sat quietly on one chair, her eyes closed as she meditated.

Early the following morning a crowd gathered in the square outside the lower gatehouse of Auld Castle. Rishala and Meridaun were late joining the crowd of Caledonians. From their distant vantage point behind so many people, they were barely able to see the platform that had been erected overnight near the outer portcullis of the gatehouse.

The knights picked up the battered body of Franz Stalgraf. With one knight on each side of the unconscious prisoner, the party made their way through the quiet streets of Londoun. Sunrise was not far away, but the skies had only started to hint at graying.

The dirge-like song of the Sun Knights was just starting to fade as the footmen of the army marched east under the dreary sky. The noise of the hundreds of mounted knights preparing to catch up was incredible, Bilbus decided, as he walked cautiously close to the Bittrand household. The stables, and his horse, were just a couple of dozen paces away. His companions were still inside, preparing to travel with the army towards the ruins of Camelough.
